Thanksgiving Day







1. As thanksgiving day approaches to us, I want to talk about thanksgiving day which is a national holiday of America . Here is a link about details of thanksgiving: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thanksgiving
2. In the United States, thanks giving day is started on fourth Thursday of November every year. On that day, family will get together to celebrate this holiday with traditional turkey dinner. It normally begins at mid-afternoon and celebrates for great harvest of each year.
3. The history of thanks giving day may backing about 300 years ago, it started in 1621 before United states of America was formed. On September 6, 1620, the mayflower ship set sail from Devon, England to America. This ship was taking roughly 100 English pilgrims to the new continental, America.
4. The pilgrims sailed 66 days and finally arrived in America in November of the same year. They settle in a cornfield first and work on the land with much difficulty. About half of them died due to fatal disease. However, with help of an Indian named Squanto and his tribe, these pilgrims have learnt how to plant corn, bean, pumpkin and other crops, etc.
5. In the late September 1621, the pilgrim came to their great harvest. To celebrate the first harvest, they thank for god and invited all the native Indian to celebrate together in a feast. They ate turkey, duck, birds as well as some seafood. Therefore, the word “thanksgiving” came to people’s life.
6. The Thanksgiving Day was a time of happiness, friendship and appreciation with somebody who has helped you ever before. It became a holiday celebrating harvest for next 150 years until 1777.
7. On October, 3, 1777, president George Washington declared that thanksgiving day became national holiday and people can observe a day of public thanksgiving.
8. As for dinner on thanksgiving day, the turkey is required for each family. Beside it, pumpkin pie, cranberry sauce, corn are some dishes cooked in every family.
9. In addition, there are thanksgivings parades will be shown for people. It is an official day started with President Lincoln. Some soldiers in dress to display the country’s military strength and power so that encouraging people to love their country and providing a wholesome entertainment for them as well.

  3. Your essay let me deeply know about Thanksgiving Day. In china, this festival is not as famous as Christmas Day. Probably, china has rare people believe god. Despite all that, quite large number of people celebrate it nowadays. I expet this big festival coming soon.

  4. I did not know about Thanksgiving Day so much before I read this article. I will go to NY on Thanksgiving holiday. I told my American friend about this plan, then he said 'what? Thanksgiving Day is important holiday. Family gather to home, and they have special meal together.' I felt sorry about this.
    I will celebrate Thanksgiving day with family or friends if I stay the US again in the future.

  6. As a traditional festival, I know so little about it. After reading your article, I know that Thanksgiving day is a day to celebrate harvest. Harvest is a big event for every culture, like Halloween is also a festival to celebrate harvest.

    I agree with you that Thanksgiving Day is really important, we should celebrate it. However, I do not agree with you that turkey is required for each family. Only if we have the grateful and thankful feeling is enough, I think.

  9. Thanks for your information. I have been in Canada, and the thanksgiving day in canada is different from American one. Only Unite state and English people celebrate Thanksgiving in this day, beacause they realyy were thanking for those native prople. Another thing about thanksgiving is : i hate both turkey and pomkin pie...therefore, it is not really my holiday. However, i still be happy beacase i am going to have 5 days off!!!That is great@

  11. Thank you for your blog about Thanksgiving. I really learned a lot. Chinese people do not usually celebrate the Thanksgiving Day. However we do should have a indebted attitude in our daliy life. Be thankful for everything you get is very necessary. We will feel happy evertday.

  12. yep~! Thanks giving day is like a Chinese tradditonal day which is called the Mid-Autumn Festiva. In this special time, familis are siiting around the table and share the most fantastic meal through out the year, that is amiable and awesome. For us, though we may not go back to our homecountry even though when the New Year is coming, but it is indeed that we can enjou our first Thanks Giving in the United States and that is supposed to be an interesting experience for us. I like Thanks Giving~ I expect the 5 days in Chicago.~!

  14. In Korea have a similar holiday like thanksgiving. We were using Chinese calendar, so every year has different thanksgiving days in korea. I love thanksgiving because our family always make some food and hang out together. But this year, I am going to purdue with my friends. Anyway, I hope everyone will have a great vacation!

    IT SEEMS THAT A LOT OF PEOPLE WILL ENJOY A TRIP TO SOMEWHERE. THANKSGIVING BREAK IS, FOR ME, THE TIME TO DO HOMEWORK. AS THE HOMEWORK WE HAVE IN PHD IS MUCH MORE TIME-CONSUMING, WE NEED TO TAKE LONGER TIME TO FINISH IT. BUT USUALLY WE DON'T HAVE THAT SUBSTANTIAL AMOUNT OF TIME. SO I DON'T EAT TURKEY AND DO HOMEWORK!
